Worms For Composting

by John Yazo

Worm composting is a simple and basic way to recycle household kitchen scraps and even paper products. To do this you need to create a good environment by building or purchasing a worm compost bin, install proper bedding material for the worms to be happy in, save household kitchen scraps and then get some worms to turn this organic matter into rich humus organic fertilizer for your household potted plants and your garden.

One thing you need to know, not just any worms will do. The worms and night crawlers that you find in your garden and yard aren't the most aggressive worm for this process. The best worm for composting are red worms, also known as red wigglers.

There are allot of worm farms online that you can purchase re wigglers from. They run anywhere from $25.00 to $40.00 a pound and you will need about one pound for every square foot area of compost bin surface area. Keep one thing in mind when purchasing your worms, they reproduce fairly quick so don't over order. Start out small and grow your composting to the amount of worms you have.

Red wigglers are a worm that thrives in rich organic matter. The worms that you find in your garden and lawn are soil dwelling worms. Soil dwelling worms are not aggressive eaters of organic matter like the red wiggler is.

Remember start out slow and build your composting bins to the specific needs that you have. Starting out slow will make it allot easier to learn and adjust as you need too.
