Worm Composting Food

by John Yazo

Worms aren't really fussy eaters. They will eat anything that is of organic origin. Kitchen scraps are the best source of food for worms and they aren't picky on what type. Even though the worms aren't fussy there are a few thing that you should keep in mind when feeding them. Dairy products and meats should be avoided or keep to a minimum. These two items can rot and and create an odor that not only can be unpleasant but can also attract rodents and other unwanted pests.

The best types of food for the worms are peals or other waste from vegetables and fruits, coffee grounds even with the filter paper, tea bags without the glossy label tag and staple, plate scraps like spaghetti is a great choice that they will love, eggshells that are crushed fine and spoiled foods. If the food is spoiled badly bury it under a few inches of the bedding material.

Do not use cat or dog feces and kitty litter in your composting. Also stay away from putting any non-biodegradable materials like foils, plastics, etc. Salt is another item that really needs to be keep out of the compost. If you put shells from clams or oysters make sure you wash the salt off before putting them in the compost bin.

Start out your worm composting slow with the feedings to see how much the worms eat and observe what they like and dislike so you can adjust accordingly. you are the one in charge of there diet. Keep them happy.
