Wood Chip Mulch
Wood chip mulch can be either hardwood or softwood. The can be purchased at your local garden center or from a tree removal company.
They have a high carbon / nitrogen ratio. During the decomposing process they can reduce the nitrogen in the soil temporarily for plants intake. You may have to add amendments to raise the nitrogen in the soil.
Wood chips weather quickly and loose there attractive appearance. Replenishing the wood chips every year will bring back the appearance. One downside of renewing the wood chips every year is that they can build up around the plants and the base of the plants can form cankers. Turning the old chips into the soil or removing them before you add more will help the build up of excess chips.
