The Proper Installation of Your Window Boxes is Important
by John Yazo
There are many types of brackets on the market that you can buy and use to hang your window boxes. There are ones that you can simply hook to your window or window railing. These brackets allow you to just sit the window box on top which can be dangers due to the fact that the boxes can slide off or be blown off by a heavy wind. These are fine if your window box is small and you don't plan on filling them with potting soil, but the box still needs to be fastened with some type of method that will be safe. If your window boxes are large or they will need to support more weight than just imitation plants, it is very important that you install your window boxes with a safe and secure method so that it doesn't shift, fall, or break. Decorative window box brackets look nice and can be added, but should not be used as the main method of supporting a window box.
It is important that Window boxes are installed so they are sturdy and level. This is important not only so that they look right, but also that they will drain properly. This is another reason to avoid those quick hook on type bracket systems. They can bend under the weight of a well planted window box. The ideal method for installing window boxes is to use the true anchor or lag bolt method. By using this method you are securing and installing your window boxes to the homes exterior in a manner that you can ensure it is level, sturdy, and most important, safe. This method will also add value to the home by becoming an integral part of it. The best way to secure a window box to your home is to anchor it through the back of the box and go directly into the house framing or masonry. To do this you will need to drill a hole the size that is recommended by the manufacture for the size anchor you are using in the back of the window box and at the separation distances that the anchor manufacture recommends. Following the manufactures specifications is very important. Not all anchors are the same. They are all rated for the weight they can handle and need to be installed properly to be safe.
Next you will need to transfer the location of these holes by holding the window box up to the window level and placing a pencil or marker through the holes. Then take the window box down and drill a hole into the house framing or masonry at each mark. These are going to be your anchor points that will support the window box. To finish hold the window box back up and pass each bolt with a washer through the back of the window box and into the predrilled holes in the framing and tighten. If fastened into masonry you will need to insert anchor shields and drill the holes to the recommended manufactures specifications.
One very important thing that needs to be keep in mind is when drilling into your house to secure anything is you will need to research and find out if there are any wiring, plumbing or anything that can be damaged or that can harm you if drilled through. Be safe and take your time before starting any home improvement project and do your homework and research.
