Welcome Good Bugs To Your Garden - They can be your best friend

by John Yazo

Organic gardening is growing your garden in harmony with nature. Insects are a critical part of the system. Creating an environment for beneficial insects will help control the pests in your garden.

Beneficial insects will stay in your garden if there is a good food supply for them. They need nectar to survive. Heirloom or native plants are the best types of plants for the production of nectar, most hybrid plants are not as productive. Plant a variety of plants so that you will have blooming flowers as many months out of the year as possible. Companion Planting and plants that are part of the sunflower, cabbage and carrot family are very attractive to beneficial insects. The planting of a good variety of flowering heirloom plants will also attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden.

Having toads in your garden is another way to control insects in your garden. Creating a natural environment that will keep them cool and an area that has moist soil will attract toads to your garden naturally.

Mulching is another way to keep beneficial insects like spiders in your garden. Mulch all areas of your garden that have exposed soil. This will provide a shelter for spiders. Spiders are the number one predator on insects.

Do not use insecticides. Insect control by natural methods are a lot safer.Pesticides and insecticides are only a temporary solution to insect control and you will kill off the beneficial insects that are the natural enemies to the pests in your garden and the toxic chemicals in insecticides pollute the air and our ground water supply. Not only will pesticides kill beneficial insects but they will also harm or kill wildlife like hummingbirds
