Watering Your Vegetables - Plants Need Water To Survive
by John Yazo
Plants
need water to survive just like any living thing does. How much water
they need depends on a few factors. It is important to know when
and how much to water your
plants need to be healthy. If your plants get to much water it can
cause the plants to disease, not enough water and the plants will
dehydrate and
die. Watering plants properly you will develop healthy
plants which in return will give you a healthy crop with bigger yields.
Watering your plants should be done in the early morning so the water soaks into the soil before the heat during the day evaporates it. This will also limit plants from getting diseased. You should water deeply, letting the water reach deep down into the soil will help your plants develop a healthy root system.
Your plants should get one inch of water a week. Installing a rain gauge will help you know if there was enough rainfall and if you should water. You don't want to over water.
Mulching your garden will help keep the moisture in the ground and prevent the ground from drying out. You can tell if your garden has been watered properly by moving back some mulch and checking to see if the ground under the mulch is damp. Even in hot summer days the soil under the mulch should always be moist. Mulch also helps to prevent weeds which compete with your plants for water.
Using compost as a mulch is a excellent choice. When you water your plants you are letting nutrients soak into the soil to feed your plants. Compost is also a excellent soil amendment for your garden and will also help retain moisture along with improving the soil structure for your plants to thrive.
