Watering And Soil - Are Your Plants Getting Enough Or To Much Water

by John Yazo

There are things to take into consideration about watering your garden. Just because it rained or you water with a garden hose doesn't mean the plants are getting enough water.

Soil is a big part in watering your plants. Plants benefit from water that is soaked into the soil, not water that runs through the soil. Soil contains pore spaces to hold air and water. Ideal conditions of soil is fifty percent pore space.Soil structure is a big part of retaining the water needed for plants to survive.

One inch of water is about one half gallon per square foot of soil. This water amount is if your soil has good tilth and retains water well.Good soil structure with organic matter will hold water needed for plants to survive.

Organic mulch like straw, shredded leaves, pine needles and compost soften the rainfall and let water soak into the soil instead of running off the surface.
