Protecting Your Water Garden From Contamination

by John Yazo

Pollution can cause serious problems with a pond. With a little simple planning you can save your pond from the problem of contamination. It is something that is easily overlooked and once the pond is built can be a major problem to fix.

Choosing a location that is higher than the surrounding area is not always possible. There can be neighboring land that is higher and the rainwater runoff can enter your pond. This can pollute the pond and even contaminate it with pesticides used by your neighbors.

When choosing your location you may need to adjust the elevation of your pond to keep it high enough so the rainwater runoff is diverted around it. Even if the only area you have is lower than the neighboring land you can simply mound up the ground around it to divert the water away from your pond.

Mounding the area around the pond can simple be done with soil and covered with rocks to give it a more natural look. Building a rock garden around your informal pond will also add natural beauty, while creating an environment for wildlife to to call home.

There are many creative ways that a pond can be landscaped to add the effects that fit naturally in the area you choose. Along with rocks you can plant ground cover plants that stay low to the ground and accented with flowers. Your imagination is the limit in the way you choose to create the environment that is appealing to your needs and desires. Get creative and build your own pond landscape in your own yard.
