Vegetable Garden Location -Plan Before Planting
by John Yazo
Choosing a garden location in your yard is one of the more important parks in having a garden that is healthy and productive. When deciding on a location for your vegetable garden you should keep a few things in mind like, sun, soil conditions, watering and drainage.
Having a location with enough sun is very important for a vegetable garden. You should pick a location that gets at least eight hours of sun. If there are trees in the area stake out the garden location you are thinking about and watch the shadows from the trees. This will change as the seasons change but it will give you a good idea if that area is going to be getting anywhere close to the needed amount of sun.
Soil conditions are the next part of planning your garden. Amendments can always be added to the soil to improve it so I would worry more if it was to rocky for you to work with the tools that you have. If it is the only location and it is to rocky to work you can build a raised bed garden above the rock.
Watering is another factor in planning a garden. How easy is it going to be to get water to the garden during dry seasons if you had to water. This may seam like a minor factor but it is one that you should think about while you are in the planning stage of your garden.
Drainage and runoff are other factors that you should be thinking about. You don't want your garden to be in a low area that collects water after a heavy rain or at the bottom of a hill where water will runoff after a heavy rain and wash the garden away.
The area where you plan on your garden should be as level as possible. If the land slopes slightly that wont be too bad. Just plant your rows across the slope and not up or down it. This will help to slow water runoff back and will help hold moisture in your garden. If the area is steep you can always terrace the area with the same method as building a raised bed garden. Just one side will be taller than the other to make the beds level.
Once your planning is finished it is time to start your garden.
