Types Of Mulch - Mulching Helps Your Garden

Mulch come in many different forms. There are mulches used for weed control, improving soil and ones that will also add nutrients to the soil to feed your plants.
Organic Mulches For Vegetables
Compost = works great as a mulch. It helps to retain moisture, control weeds and adds nutrients back into the soil at the same time for your plants.
Cocoa Shell- is the broken up shells from cocoa beans. It has a smell of chocolate and has a dark brown color that darkens deeper in time from the weather. WARNING there are reports that cocoa shells can be lethal to cats and dogs. Cocoa shell mulch can be used as a winter protection mulch and can be used as a soil amendment for drainage of soil.
Straw - breaks down quickly and adds nutrients back into to the soil. It is great for weed control. Straw doesn't have any seeds.
Pine Needles - decompose slowly and are attractive. They are course and allow water to seep through them.Leaves - are great for weed control. They are best to shred before using. Run them through a shredder or just use your lawn mower. Grass Clippings- Great for vegetables. Apply in a thin layer, applied to thick they will mat down. Avoid grass clippings that have been treated with a herbicide.
Organic Mulches For Flowers
Wood Chips - are great for paths and flower beds. They come in many different colors and sold at your local garden center. Keep wood chips away from your house. They can attract termites.
Bark Mulch - is sold at garden centers as nuggets, wood chips or shredded bark. they decompose slowly and are attractive.
Rock/Stone - They have no effect in improving soil. They are attractive and come in many colors. They don't decompose so they never need replacing.
