Soil Conditions For Growing Tomatoes
by John Yazo
Tomatoes can at time be a challenge to grow. They will grow in many types of soil, but only thrive in one. To have a successful high yielding tomato crop there is a few things that you will need to know about the soil you are growing them in. A good healthy soil structure is very important in having a successful tomato crop.
To grow a thriving crop you will need an organic, nutrient rich garden soil that drains well and retains water, along with the nutrients needed to make tomatoes plants thrive. A good healthy soil structure is very important in growing a successful garden.
Poor soil quality is the main reason for any poor crop production. It not only effects the productivity of the crop, it also effects the quality, there can still be high yields in crops but the quality can be poor. Nutrients, water retention and air in the soil all effect the way a crop will grow. Soil is what makes a plant healthy and strong. When a plant isn't healthy it is not as resistant to disease and pest problems in the garden. A good healthy soil quality is the key to defending your crops from these problems naturally.
Start out by testing your gardens soil to see what you are working with. Find out the texture of the soil, the nutrients that are in that soil and the ph level of the soil to start. Once you have all this information you can amend the soil to the needs of the crop or crops you are growing.
Tomatoes prefer a soil that is deep, loose, rich and with plenty of organic matter mixed in. The ph level of the soil should be between 6.5 to 7.0, preferable to the lower side. Planting your tomato plants deep in this type of soil will allow them to form the root system they need to take in all the natural nutrients that make them thrive.
