Growing heirloom tomatoes can be a true joy for the organic vegetable gardener. Taking care of your plants, watching them thrive a produce a healthy high yielding crop is every gardeners dream. But there are things that can get in the way of this happening if the proper care isn't taken.
Tomatoes can suffer from many different types of disease and pest problems that can harm the health along with there productivity. The most common problems are ones that have to do with the weather conditions and is something that the gardener has no control over, but there are disease and pest problems that can be controlled.
Looking for varieties of tomatoes that are native to your area or to an area with the same climate or growing conditions as yours is one way to keep these problems to a minimum. Having a plant that can grow strong and healthy in the proper environment will give it the ability to fight off disease and pest problems, where as a week plant can't. Plants that grow in there native environment are use to the weather and the nutrients in the soil to grow a healthy and productive life.
Diseases with tomato crops are rarely fatal to the plant if they are properly managed early, this is before they have a chance to spread to other tomato plants and even other plants of the same family.
Some of the most common disease problems that can effect your vegetable garden are early blight, gray leaf spot, late blight, septoria leaf spot, southern blight and verticillium wilt. These diseases can all be controlled with the proper management of your organic garden. Natural methods are a lot healthier for both you and your plants.
