Testing Garden Soil - Test!...Don't Guess!

by John Yazo

Soil testing is easy to do and it is a good practice to test your garden soil especially if you are starting a new garden.

If your garden isn't producing well simply testing the soil will tell you if the soil is lacking the nutrients needed to sustain plant development.

There are three ways that you can test your garden soil. The first way is to take a sample to a local agricultural testing laboratory. They can be found under government agencies  for your state in  your local directory. The second way is to purchase a soil test kit from your local garden center and the third way is electronic with a meter.

The test performed by your local agricultural laboratory usually are detailed and give you recommendations on how you can improve the soil structure in your garden.

If you decide to test the soil yourself or take a sample to a laboratory do it with care. The soil test is only as good as the sample taken. It is important that you take soil samples accurately to represent the soil in that location.
