Soilless Potting Mix

by John Yazo

Soilless potting soil mix is most of the time made up of sphagnum peat. It is lightweight, drains well and retains enough water for seeds to germinate.

When you start working with sphagnum peat it takes a little time to get it to soak in water. It is the one part of making your soilless mix that will take time. Put some peat in a pail or bucket and add water while mixing it steadily until the water is absorbed and all the peat is of a consistent moist texture.

There are other amendments such as bark, coir, perlite or vermiculite that you can add to sphagnum peat to control the amounts of water retained, air retained or drainage. These three components are the key to propagating plants and seed. Compost added to potting soil mix will also add beneficial nutrients to the soil that the plants need to grow.

Making your own soilless mix is fairly simple to do. All the components that you will need to make your own soilless mix can be purchased at most all local garden centers.

Read all manufacture directions and warnings on the packages  for the proper handling and safety measures that they recommend.
