Self-Reliant Gardening - Being Self-Reliant Saves
by John Yazo
Gardening with heirloom seeds you need to be self-reliant. You just can't go anywhere to get seeds for your garden as you can with planting hybrid seeds. You need to save your own seeds and that can only be done with heirloom or open pollinated plant seeds. Hybrids do no produce the same vegetable year after year. There genes have been altered to produce vegetables that will withstand mechanical harvesting, shipping and holding color longer for resale. Saving your own seeds also saves you money. Buying seeds every year can be costly and saving seeds isn't hard to do.
Composting is another part of being self-reliant. It is a excellent source of nutrition for your garden which saves from buying fertilizers and is also a excellent choice of mulch for your plants. Keeping your plants mulched is a great way to prevent insect infestation and disease control in your garden.
It is a great feeling to be self-reliant and raise produce for you and your family that is healthy for both you and the environment.
