Raised Garden Bed Preparation
by John Yazo
Raised beds can be a creative way to add dimension to your yard. They can be built with lumber, stone, blocks or they can be bought as a kit.
Preparing for a raised garden bed you should first pick your location. Depending on what you want to plant you could put them in full sun, partial shade or build it in full shade.
The next step is to layout the shape. building a raised garden bed with shape adds dimension to to your landscape. Kits come in hundreds of shapes and sizes. If you plan on building one with your own design and shape the easiest way is to take a garden hose and lay it on the ground to the shape you want. Then take some lime and a cup to sprinkle the lime tracing the hose shape.
After you layout your design you should remove any grass and weeds. Then dig and loosen the existing soil to a minimum depth of eight inches. This is called double digging. Now you are ready to build your raised garden bed.
Once you complete the construction of the bed it is time to fill it in. Use a good quality organic rich soil. One that has good drainage quality and full of nutrition.
It's time to plant you plants and enjoy the beauty of nature in your own yard.
