Go Green and Create a Rain Garden As a Part of Your Landscape
by John Yazo
Rain gardens are a great eco-friendly method of controlling flood water and pollutants from entering our natural water supplies. They can be as simple as a shallow depression in your yard that will hold water for short periods of time. These depressions are just enough to hold rain water runoff and let it gather, stopping it from entering municipal storm drains to end up in our natural water sources.
Storm water runoff carries pollutants from the roads, like oils and metals. Allowing this water to collect will give it the chance to leach into the soil or be taken up by plants to be purified naturally, by natures methods, along with aiding in flood prevention.
Landscaping these depression with different native plants will add beauty and an environment to attract wildlife for you to enjoy, like birds, butterflies and toads. This form of wildlife is also beneficial in controlling the unwanted insects in your yard. Local native variety plants that are use to large soakings of water at a time are usually the best choice for this type of landscape. They are already adapted to the area and climate conditions. Your local garden centers can usually tell you what is best for your area.
Organic gardening is a good method to incorporate into this type of landscape. With a good healthy soil structure that is full of life. These living microorganisms in the soil is what help in the purification of toxins that enter the soil from storm water runoff.
Go Green and start your own rain garden and
help in cleanup of
