Grafting - A Unique Method Of Plant Propagation

by John Yazo

Grafting is a unique method of plant propagation. It isn't that difficult to do, you just need patients. It is a very common method of propagation that is used on woody plants like shrubs and trees. The options when using this method of propagation are greater than any of the other methods. When grafting you are attaching living tissue from one plant to another. This is the only way that you can have a fruit tree produce more than one type of fruit on the same tree.

The main objective when grafting is that you want to match the layers of cambium tissue of each plant that you are grafting together. The cambium tissue is the layer of tissue under the bark. It is what transports water and nutrients through the plant.

The stem of the parent plant is known as the rootstock and the the part that your are going to attach to the rootstock is called the scion. Once the rootstock and scion are joined together they form what is know as a callousal area.

There are more than one method of grafting. There is what is known as cleft, bark, side , splice, whip and lounge, saddle, bridge and inarch grafting. All these methods have there own unique methods and times to be used.

Grafting is a method of plant propagation that is done while the plants are in ther dormant state. This is usually done in the winter or early spring months of the year.

Get creative and try your hand at grafting and see what you can produce with the plants that you have in your own yard.
