Garden Potatoes - Organic Grown in Your Backyard
by John Yazo
Potatoes grown fresh in your own garden can be very rewarding when grown with organic methods. Natural nutrients that will have your crop thriving, along with improving the soil structure of your garden.
Soil is the key to any successful crop, even potatoes. Choose an area that gets full sun all day and amend your gardens soil so that it has a healthy soil structure, if it doesn't already. The soil structure should be one that retains the moisture and nutrients you plants need and benefit from, along with being able to drain well.
Healthy soil will not only benefit your potato crop by the moisture and nutrients it can hold, it will also aid in the defence of disease and pest problems in your garden. There is a complex community of organisms that live in the soil naturally and feeding them the organic matter they need to survive will greatly benefit your garden.
These organisms are what till your garden and convert the natural nutrients in your soil to a form that plants can benefit from. A natural method of fertilizing your garden. All you have to do is supply the soil food web with the organic matter it needs and let it do the work for you.
In organic gardening you feed the gardens soil, not the plants. It is a chemical free way to garden, along with being healthier for both you and the environment by not polluting the air we breath and the water we drink.
