Choose a location that receives 6 to 8 hours minimum of sun light as possible, an area that has good air circulation twenty four hours a day. Air circulation and sun are very important in defending your plants from diseases and rotting.
Soil is also a very important part when growing a rewarding crop of potatoes. A soil with a healthy organicstructure is ideal. Working with the soil that you have and improving it's structure can be accomplished easily by amending it with compost. All types of soils can be improved and when amending it with organic matter you will be supplying the soils food web the fuel the natural organisms in the soil need to work hard for you to improve the soils structure naturally. These organisms are what help turn natural minerals in to a form that your plants can benefit from.
A good organic soil structure is one that retains moisture and nutrients for your plants to benefit from, along with being a soil that drains well. Healthy soil will greatly benefit your plants by supplying them with the nutrients they need and help in the prevention of diseases that are common in the traditional methods of gardening.
