Potatoes Grown Fresh - A Favorite in Most Kitchens
by John Yazo
Potatoes, a favorite in most kitchens, this crop has become a popular crop choice in the home garden. Easy to grow in containers, raised beds or the traditional garden grown fresh with organic gardening methods. It's hard to imagine a world without them.
With the large variety of choices you have when it comes to wanting to plant potatoes in your garden is which one to choose, early, mid-early, medium to late or late maturing varieties. Having all these choices makes it easy to plant more than one variety to have a crop that can supply your needs with a fresh crop all season long, along with potatoes that will store through the months that you can't garden in your area.
When planting your crop, a good rule of thumb, especially if you are dealing with limited space is to plant an early variety to get a summer harvest and as other space becomes available from other matured crops, plant another potato crop to take it's place. Another benefit with planting potatoes is that you don't have to wait for the the crop to fully mature, you can harvest your crop when the potatoes are small and tender, this is ideal when planting in containers.
With a healthy organic soil structure, you can have a thriving crop of fresh grown, chemical free, potatoes growing in your home garden. There is no comparison between a potato that is grown fresh in your garden and ones bought in the local supermarket.
With the proper conditions, light, soil and water, you can also include potatoes as a part of your edible landscape.
