Permaculture - Nature Gardening In Your Backyard

by John Yazo

Permaculture is a method of gardening that is based on ecological and biological principles. It is a natural method of gardening that works along with nature to maximizes the natural resources that exist to benefit plant growth, along with minimizing the amount of physical labor needed to achieve a thriving garden at the same time.

One of the best aspects of permaculture gardening is that it can be adapted to and environment, rural, suburban and urban areas, along with having the ability of being any size. Container gardens, including window boxes, to all the other traditional methods of gardening can use the principles of permaculture in their gardening or landscape practices.

To incorporate permaculture in your gardening practices, you will need to have some knowledge of ecological systems, along with theory, to create a healthy environment. When designing a permaculture system, every element of it needs to be beneficial to the system, and also the relationships between these elements act to support it. A well designed system with positive relationships of elements will improve the condition of the land you are growing your crops on, maximize productivity, and ensure that the land can be used indefinitely.

To achieve this, recycling waste of animal, plant, or any activity of the permaculture system to be used to benefit another part of the system just as nature does naturally. Studying the way nature works naturally in your area is the best way to get the knowledge of how an ecosystem is created. It is a natural process that nutrients are replenished back into the system naturally without the need to add them to the soil by artificial means. This is not only a cost affective, it is also a method of preventing pollution.

Diversity is a major part of permaculture, unlike modern agricultural practices that produce mass quantities of a single crop. Permaculture relies on a variety of different crops and animals to support each other. This way if any one species comes under attack by a predator, or pest, there is a good chance that within the system there will be a natural method in place to protect it, or defend it before the crop is harmed. In modern agriculture, if a crop is attacked by a pest, the entire crop can be lost.

Thinking carefully on how we use our resources, energy, food, material and non-material needs, and shelter, you will see it is very possible to receive much more out of life by using less. Permaculture practices give you the ability to be more productive, with less effort, and at the same time benefit from the environment and ourselves at the present time and for generations to come.
