Composting Used As a Method of Disease and Pest Control
by John Yazo
Organic gardening is all about soil, feed the soil so it will benefit the plant life you are growing in your gardens and as a part of your landscape. Compost is the answer you are looking for when looking for a soil amendment that offers many natural benefits for both the plant life you are growing and the soil you are growing our crops in.
A good healthy organic structure is the key to growing strong healthy plant life and basically is it's own ecosystem. This is what organic gardening is all about, having a soil that is well balanced so chemicals aren't needed for disease and pest control. Putting together a good soil management plan and amending your gardens soil with organic matter, compost, is the key to improving your gardens soil structure.
Having a good healthy organic garden soil structure doesn't mean that pests or diseases won't ever be present in your garden, but it will grow strong healthy plant life that can defend themselves from most problems. Unhealthy plant life is easy prey for pests and disease problems in your gardens and once attacked they wont have the strength to defend themselves and battle the problem naturally.
Composting can be done by two methods, quick or hot composting or slow, cool composting. Whichever method you choose the end product will be a rich humus organic matter that will greatly benefit and improve your gardens soil structure. Compost will improve any type of soil structure and can be referred to as either a soil amendment or a soil conditioner. It improves the soils structure, giving it the ability to retain air, nutrients and moisture, along with letting these three elements to be readily available for plant life when they need them.
There is a large complex community of life that exists naturally in compost. This life is made up of many organisms, microorganisms, bacteria and fungi that are constantly working and improving the soils structure, along with consuming the pest and disease organisms naturally. Nature has it's own method of keeping things in the ecosystem in balance, and all you need to do is to feed your gardens soil the organic matter it needs to keep this live that exists naturally healthy.
Growing plant life that is strong is healthy is the biggest step in disease and pest control in your organic garden. This can only be done when the soil in your garden is also healthy and can provide the plant life the support it needs.
