Organic Pest Control - Developing a System by Looking and Learning

by John Yazo

Organic garden pest control is a natural and healthy way of keeping the plant life in your gardens safe. It involves more than just the prevention or controlling of pests. There are three elements that need to be included in a successful system to keep everything in balance. Soil, plant variety, and the encouragement of natural predators are all just as equally important.

A written plan and a journal are very important, keeping records will aid you in what is know as a calendar of activities to look back on. These records, when keep on a regular bases, will allow you to see if there is a pattern for certain problems and gives you the ability to be ready for them ahead of time.

Start your plan out by learning about the plants your are growing in your landscape or gardens, especially there preference of growing conditions. Once you have learned about the plants, you will need to make a drawing or sketch of the garden you want, and put together a list of concerns or problems that you have encountered in your past gardening experiences. Take your time and think this step through, it is very important.

Now that you have everything in writing, it is time to do some research. Go through your plant list and learn what plants when grown together with a companion will benefit each other. Learn the life cycle of the pests that have been a problem in the past, including how they overwinter, where and when, along with how they attacked your plants in the past. With this information, it gives you the ability to be one step ahead of the problem and will allow you to have a prevention plan in place before a problem happens again.

Soil is another area that needs consideration, like it's structure and nutritional values. A good healthy soil structure is one that has a lively complex community of life existing it it. This life is made up of many organisms and microorganisms that can be very beneficial in preventing or controlling pests and diseases, along with supplying the soil with nutrients for the plant life to benefit from when they need it.

A plan wont solve the problems of any garden by itself, you need to watch and study the plant life. Daily, if not at least weekly, walk through your gardens and look for any signs of a problem. Take the time to stop and look carefully at the plants leaves, top and bottom. Watch for signs of unhealthy or stressed plants, the soon you discover a problem the better the chance you will have in helping the plat recover.
