Soil Amendments For The Organic Garden
by John Yazo
Organic soil amendments are what keeps your gardens soil healthy and nutrient rich. Keeping the soil food web supplied with the organics it needs to have the organisms and microorganisms working hard for you.
Taking care of the soil in your garden is the most important part of gardening and it can be done with just a little maintenance every year. The main concern is keeping the soil food web supplied and the rest will be taken care of by the organisms naturally. These organisms are what will decompose and till your gardens, keeping the soils structure full of nutrient rich humus.
Nature uses this same process, watching natures ways in your area will provide you with these same results in your garden. Plants live and die, them they decompose in all our fields, meadows and woodlands. This spent organic material, debris, is what is turned into the natural rich soil nature uses to allow plants to grow healthy.
As a home gardener, we need to compost this material to get it to decompose quicker, in nature it can be a slower process. Building a compost bin, a pile or the use of a tumbler type composter will shorten the time needed for this organic material to decompose into a rich humus ready to be used in our gardens. Once this material is ready for your garden, it isn't fully decomposed, even though it may look like it is. The rest of the work is completed by the vast community of organisms and microorganisms that live in the soil. They are what work the soil, improving it's structure, while providing the nutrients needed for your plants to thrive.
