Organic Garden Soil and Thriving Plants
by John Yazo
It doesn't have to be a dream, it can easily be reality. Garden soil that is full of organic nutrients that your plants need to thrive and produce a yielding crop of flowers, herbs or vegetables. A soil that will have all your gardening friends wondering how you get your plants to grow so well.
The best way to improve your garden soil is with compost, adding organic matter to your gardens soil. It is the same method nature uses to feed the plants that grow naturally in our fields, forests and meadows. material that is organic will supply a food source for the natural organisms in the soil to work for you by tilling and adding nutrients to the soil for your plants to benefit from.
Making compost isn't that hard to do and it can be done in a variety of different ways. There are small kitchen composters for the gardener that just garden in containers or pots, and there are systems for the gardener that has a garden in the backyard. Composting can also be done in bins or just by piling all your organic household and yard waste to let it decompose naturally.
If you don't have the time or space to compost, or just don't want to, you can purchase bagged compost and your local garden center. If you choose this way, it is best to buy two or three different brands and mix them together before using. Commercially bought compost is made in volume, by using different brands and blending them together will give you a variety of organic matter types.
Soil, healthy and full of organic matter is the key to having a successful organic garden. It is what will supply your plants the nutrients they need to thrive. Chemical fertilizers only feed the plants and destroy the organisms that live in your gardens soil. These organisms not only create a healthier soil, they can be very beneficial to pest and disease control.
