Selecting a Site For Your Organic Garden

by John Yazo

The site you select for your organic garden can be the main factor in having a garden that thrives. Adequate sunlight is very important for growing a good healthy, thriving crop, along with soil drainage and fertility.

Take your time and observe the area that you have in mind for your garden. watch to see how much sunlight that location gets throughout the day. To grow a vegetable garden that will thrive, you will need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Keep in mind that the amount of sunlight an area gets can change with the seasons, just because you have full sunlight in the spring when you started doesn't mean it will be that way mid-summer.

Air circulation is the next part that is very beneficial to growing a healthy garden. A good air flow will help prevent disease and damage from frost, both in the late spring and one that can happen in the early fall. The opposite also can be a problem, an area that gets to strong of winds can damage your plants and dry out the soil quickly. To much wind can be simply reduced by planting a loose shrub type plant to protect the garden.

Drainage is very important, most vegetables wont tolerate a wet soil. A good way to check a location for drainage is during or after a rainfall. If you walk the area and it is puddled with water, it is best to stay away from that area. If it is the only location you have, you can simply build a raised bed garden on top of the existing ground.

Another thing to keep in mind is how far away from the house or a water supply you will be if there is a dry growing season. Keeping your garden watered through the dry times is very important.
