Organic Fertilizers - Animal , Mineral or Vegetable

by John Yazo

Organic Gardening is a method that involves growing plants in harmony with nature and with natural methods. Organic fertilizers are the same basic method of adding nutrients back into the soil the way that nature does naturally. There are three basic forms of nutrients and are produced from animals, minerals and vegetable. They all have their own unique way of supplying the soil with the nutrients needed for plants to thrive.

Vegetation that has gone through the decomposition process of composting is one way to get nutrients back into the soil. The nutrients aren't as high as other methods but the benefit of adding this composted matter into to the soil will improve the soils structure and help retain the nutrients plants need.

Animal manure is a great way to add nutrients back into the soil. Manures from animals, whether it be from birds, chickens, fish, horses or cows needs to be composted first. The nitrogen levels in manures can be high and burn the root system of plants, especially tender young seedlings.

Nutrients from minerals are a byproduct of rock or rock dust. They are a very slow but steady way of adding nutrients back into the soil that are essential for plants to survive. Adding these minerals like greensand for adding potassium and iron or limestone for adding calcium. When needed they are also a great way to improve the structure of soil in your garden.
