Nitrogen In Garden Soil - BE SAFE!... NOT SORRY!... TEST REGULARLY!
Plants require nitrogen for there leaf production. Low nitrogen amounts will cause plants to grow slowly, the plants will appear yellow and they will have smaller than normal leaves.
Organic fertilizers that contain nitrogen are horse manure, cattle manure, poultry manure, dried blood, fish emulsion and cottonseed meal.
The primary time that plants need nitrogen is from three to ten weeks after seeding. Organic fertilizers are slow release so you should apply then a planting time so the nitrogen will be available for the plants at the peak time of need.
Testing of the soil on a regular basis will prevent the lose of to much of the nutrients needed for plant growth. It is simple to do and will be a lot less work building your garden soil back to it's proper nutrient levels.
