Leaf Mulch
by John Yazo
Leaves are an excellent source of mulch but need to be shredded fine before using. Leaves that have not been shredded will mat and form a barrier that will block water from getting to the soil. To shred your leaves if you don't have a shredder you can simply run them over with a lawn mower or even shred them with a string trimmer.
The best way to use leaves as a mulch and get the most benefit from them is to use them when they are partially decomposed. They will finish there decomposing in place while adding humus, nitrogen and nutrients into the soil.
When appling leaves that have not been decomposed yet you can spread them in layers and add a handful of either urea, ammonium nitrate or bonemeal sprinkeled over the leaves. Anyone of these organic fertilizers will ass the needed nitrogen to speed up the decompostion process and add nutrients to the soil for your plants to feed from.
