Intensive Gardening - Planting Your Crops

Intensive gardening is a method that allows you to get the most from your garden. It also takes some planning to be successful. Putting a plan together is well worth the rewards you will receive. Companion and succession planting are two techniques that are very important factors in the plan you put together.

To have the best production in your garden, planting at the proper time is very important. Your cool season crops should be planted early and your warm season crops should be planted once all dangers have passed in your area, checking a hardness zone map for your area is helpful for frost dates in your area.

When the time is right to start planting, take the time to layout your rows. This will save time and allow for the maximum plantings that you can get out of the area you have to garden. Simple take a couple of stakes and a roll of string to mark out straight rows, then measure the spacing needed for each crop. Taking the time to do this will not only allow for maximum planting, it will keep it neat looking and easier to care for.

Depending on your hardness zone, most crops can be planted from seed directly into the garden. There are some crops that will benefit you better if started from transplants that you started early inside. The use of transplants can greatly increase your growing season when wanting to get those earl crops in or to even get a second crop to mature before the end of the growing season.

All these things involve planning. Take the time and plan, the reward will be well worth the time.
