Insect prevention starts in the fall by cleaning the garden of any dead plants and debris that can harbor insects during the winter months is very important, dead plants can also harbor disease organisms. Keeping the garden clean and a well maintained organic soil structure will greatly benefit your organic gardeen.
Fall clean-up can prevent a lot of disease problems such as early blight of tomatoes, leaf spot disease, powdery mildew and rust disease. If you have diseased plants, DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE COMPOST. Compost usually wont get hot enough to kill of diseases especially during the winter months.
Insects such as aphid eggs, asparagus beetles, flea beetles, squash bugs and slugs can harbor over the winter in dead garden plants. A good healthy organic soil structure will create the environment needed for the beneficial micro-organicuns to work hard for you in your garden to defend against pests and disease problems that can harm your garden. The soil food web is what keeps the beneficial organisums thriving.
Mulching with a three to six inch layer of organic matter can create a favorable environment for beneficial predators, bacteria and fungi to survive.
The benefits of mulching with organic matter and fall clean-up will prevent a lot of your insect and disease problems in your garden.
