Improving Clay Garden Soil - Time,Patients and Organic Matter

by John Yazo

Clay soil is really an excellent soil. It is relatively a fertile soil. Clay soil has the ability to absorb a lot of nutrients like ammonium, calcium, magnesium and potassium along with other trace elements that are all beneficial to plants.

Amending clay soil with organic matter will improve the soil structure over time. Mixing in organic matter deep into the soil will help the tilth of the soil so you can work it easier. Adding peat moss, aged manure ,compost or a mixture of all three will improve the soil structure and tilth, creating a favorable environment for arthropods, bacterias, fungi and other organisms.

Getting life into the soil is a key factor in improving clay soil. Earthworm activity along with arthropods and other living organisms burrowing through the soil, depositing nutrients, aiding in the decomposing of the organic matter will improve the soil structure of clay soil.

Adding organic matter isn't going to change the structure of clay soil to the perfect tilth overnite. it is going to take time. Organic matter will make the soil easier to work but you need the organic matter to also attract arthropods and other organisms into the soil to help work the soil for you.once the organic matter is mixed deeply into the clay soil you should keep it mulched heavy with a organic mulch. This will help prevent the soil from drying out and will make a favorable environment for arthropods and other organisms to survive in the soil.

Time, patients and a lot of organic matter is the best way to improve clay soil.
