The Hydroponic Drip System

by John Yazo

Of all the methods of hydroponics the drip system is the most widely used. They are the most common system used by the commercial grower of crops like the tomato. This system is similar to the ebb and flow system with the exception the root system of the plants are never completely under water, but they are never allowed to dry out and they allow for better aeration.

The drip system is a very simple system to operate. A pump is connected to tubing that branches of to small tubes that feed a number of plants at one time, similar to the drip irrigation that you would use in a garden. These drip points supply a nutrient solution directly onto the base of each plant and drains down into the growing media that the plant is in. This allows the root system to receive the nutrients it needs as this solution travels through the media and back into the reservoir to be used over again.

This system is a basically simple to build on your own with little trouble or they can be purchased as a complete system ready to use and some of your local garden centers.

Hydroponic gardening is becoming a more popular method of gardening for the home and urban gardener. There are systems that can be made or purchased to fit every need. They can range in size for a single plant to a full size commercial growing operation. They are a healthy way of growing crops for both you and the environment.
