Humus - It is All About Soil

by John Yazo

What is the first thing you think about when the word garden is brought up? Is it a thriving crop of vegetables, flowering plants, herbs or ripe berries. Gardening seems to be thought of being all about plants. The truth is that gardening is all about the soil you grow your plants in. Without a nutrient rich healthy soil, you wouldn't have the thriving plants you love so much in your gardens and landscape.

To most soil is the last thing on there mind, it is just there, you plant in it and feed your plants nutrients. Well, you shouldn't have to feed your plants nutrients for them to thrive. Feeding your gardens soil the organic matter it needs to work naturally, as it is done in nature, will create a healthier environment for your plants to thrive.

Soil differs from area to area. Depending on where you are, you can have a soil that is sand, silt, clay or the perfect topsoil. Whatever type you are working with, it can be amended with organic matter to either keep it healthy or improve it's structure.

Humus is the organic matter that is needed to improve the soil structure in your gardens, it is also what natures produces naturally, and what is know as compost to the home gardener. This nutrient rich material is what keeps the organisms and microorganisms working hard for you in your gardens to keep a healthy environment for your plants to grow in. A good healthy soil structure is one that has a complex living community of life constantly working and improving it. To keep this community alive, it needs to be feed.
