Backyard Hummingbird Gardens

by John Yazo

The best way to enjoy the company of hummingbirds in your own backyard is to build a hummingbird garden. These birds are visual feeder. When building a garden for them build it in a location where it can easily be searched out. Building a garden next to an existing bird feeder or placing a bird feeder in the garden will attract a larger variety of birds to the area.

With a little careful planning when building a hummingbird garden you can keep them around all season. Plant a variety of nectar producing plants that will provide them with food at different times of the season. Hybrid plants are often a plant that produces a lot less nectar than native orheirloom plants do.hummingbird

There are a large variety of plants that will attract hummingbirds. Planting tree shrubs like azalea, butterfly bush and mimosa are great ways to attract hummingbirds. Vine type plants like honeysuckle and morning glory are two plants that will also attract them along with many perennial and annual varieties of flowers. To name just a few perennials, plants like bee balm, four o'clocks, hosta or foxglove are good choices and for annuals impatiens and petunias. The best part about impatiens and petunias is that they are both great choices for window boxes. Looking out the window and being able to watch the hummingbirds feed is a spectacular site to see.

Along with attracting hummingbirds these plants will also attract butterflies to your garden. the planting of low shrub type plants are the perfect environment that will shade the ground and leave a cool shelter for toads to refuge in your garden.

One thing that is very important is not to use pesticides on plants that you want to attract hummingbirds too. Hummingbirds rely on small insects to supply them with the protein they need. In addition to that a hummingbird could easily digest pesticides directly from a plant that has been sprayed. This can make then sick or even kill them.

Have fun creating your own hummingbird garden in your own backyard or incorporate it into your patio and enjoy the company of these spectacular birds.
