Herbs
by John Yazo
All gardeners love to plant herbs, even if
they only plant a few in containers. Herb gardens are easy to
grow and take little space. Many gardeners keep there herb garden close
to the house so there is easy access to pick as needed for that days
meal. Herbs can also be planted in window boxes or in containers on a
balcony or deck. There are also kits that can be bought to
have an indoor herb garden.
Herbs are used for many purposes. They are used in cooking to spice up a recipe, scents to freshen up a room like lavender or mint, decorative purposes they can be included dry flower arrangements or wreaths and many types of herbs have been used in medicine.
Organic gardening is a way of gardening in harmony with nature. Incorporating herbs in your garden in the method of companion planting can greatly benefit your garden. Herbs like dill, fennel, lemon balm, parsley and rosemary are attractive to beneficial insects. There are also herbs like garlic that is useful against japanese beetles, mint that will help deter aphids and cabbage pests.
There is nothing better than having fresh herbs available to you for whenever you need them. Herbs can be harvested during the growing season for your daily use. Then at the end of the growing season they can be harvested for drying and stored for use in the months when fresh herbs aren't readily available along with saving seeds from the dried herbs to propagate the following year.
There are many types of herbs, enough that you can plant a garden just devoted to them.
I hope you enjoy your herb gardening
experience.
