The Types of Pests That Can Harm Your Heirloom Tomato Crop

by John Yazo

Tomatoes are a crop that can have many different pest to deal with. Most all are easy to control with the proper care. Organic gardening practices are a great way prevent pests from getting out of control.

There are two groups that these pests can be divided into. There are pest that feed on the upper parts of the plant and there are pests that feed on the root system or lower stem.

There are basically three groups that feed off the upper parts of the plant. There are the tomato fruitworm, tobacco budworm, tomato pinworm and the vegetable leafminer that mine leaves and bore into the fruit or buds. The blister beetle, cabbage looper, colorado potato beetle, flea beetle and the hornworm that chew and make holes in the leaves. Then there are the pests that suck on the sap of the plants leaves and fruits, like aphids, green peach aphid, potato aphid, greenhouse whiteflies and the stink bug.

The pests that feed on the lower stems or the root system are all in one group. The cutworm and the southern potato wireworm are the two primary pests that will cause this lower damage to your crop.

Let nature work for you in controlling the pests that can harm your garden. Nature has it's own way of keeping things in check naturally. Keeping your garden clean of debris, having a good healthy organic soil structure and creating an environment for beneficial predators will keep these pests to a minimum in your organic garden.
