Growing Heirloom Varieties of Tomatoes
by John Yazo
Heirloom Tomatoes have a lot of different qualities, from there flavors and colors, to there textures that quite different than regular tomatoes you buy at the store. There are many varieties that can be grown and they are all full of anti-oxidants, vitamins and cancer preventing agents. There colors can normally determine the amount of there acidity, darker colors are more acidic than lighter colors. The more red color a tomato has is generally an indicator of the amount of sweetness it has and green in a tomato determines tartness. Yellow and orange varieties usually have a milder, sweeter flavor and purple or black varieties have a acidic flavor that is bold and rich. By growing a variety of different heirloom tomatoes you will notice there unique qualities and flavors. This is a good way to find the new favorite for your organic heirloom garden.
Heirlooms can be unpredictable from one year to the next. There maturity time or expected number of days to ripen can vary greatly depending upon the weather and growing conditions in your area. A heirloom variety can sometimes produce less fruit than a hybrid does, planting a few extra and plant different varieties can help you have a continuous harvest throughout the season, along with letting you choose your favorites. A variety that produces well one year in a garden may not be as productive the next year. For more consistent results, grow different varieties as well to see what works best for you.
Once you start growing your own heirloom variety of tomatoes, you will most likely never go back to a hybrid again.
