From Heirloom To Hybrid

by John Yazo

As an Organic Gardener you take pride in the plants that you grow. You work along with nature to develop the best quality garden possible. One that is both safe you you and the environment. Then why not do the same by growing heirloom plants instead of hybrids that you purchase in your local garden center.

Heirloom plants are original quality plants that have a history behind them, unlike a hybrid that has been genetically changed to fit someone's needs. These needs are mainly for commercial reasons so that farms can have a high yielding crop with a longer shelf life and a crop that can be handle or transported with minimal damage.

There are many varieties of heirloom plants still readily available for the home gardener to benefit from. Flowers, vegetable, herb and fruit varieties that produce a quality that can't be compared to any other type plant and can be purchased from many seed exchange groups or even exchanged for seeds that you may have by other gardening groups.

Heirloom Gardening is a type of gardening that is usually past on from generation to generation and to other friends. When past down through the years there is usually a story to be told about it's existence creating a legacy. Why not start your own personal legacy with your family and start gardening with heirloom plants that can be passed on fro generations to come and let your family start there own legacy and memories of there gardening experiences.
