Healthy Soil Texture Is Well Proportioned
by John Yazo
Soil texture is the proportionate distribution of different size mineral particles in soil. The mineral particles that we are talking about are sand, silt and clay. There is no organic matter included in the soils texture. The particles vary in size from ones you can see to ones that you need a high powered microscope to see them.
Sand
is the largest particle in the soil and has a gritty feeling, silt is
medium in size and has a soft silky feeling and clay has the smallest
particles and is sticky feeling.
If you can take a handful of soil and form a firm ball that holds it's form the soil is most likely high in silt or clay. There is a simple way that you can do a test to see your soils texture ratio of sand, silt and clay with some common household products.
