Fresh Crisp Radishes Grown in Your Own Vegetable Garden

Crisp, colorful radishes are a popular crop grown in the home vegetable garden. They are a crop that matures very quickly and come in a variety of colors and shapes.

There are your traditional round radish that is about one inch in diameter and is commonly used in salads. Depending on the variety they can come in a rainbow of colors like red, pink, purple or white.

Oriental radishes have there own unique characteristics and can be divided into two groups. They can be grown for the usage of there tops and for there roots along for being known for there carrot shape, long and tapered.

The Rat-Tail radish, a heirloom that can add beauty to your edible landscape has a delicious taste and is very easy to grow. It is an edible pod radish, yes, one that not grown for it's root but for it's edible pod. They are picked just as you would a green bean.

There are many unique characteristics among the different varieties of radishes and a crop that can be grown in the garden, containers, window boxes, raised beds and a great choice to be planted among your landscape. Radishes are a crop that you can sow directly into the garden as early as four to six weeks before the last expected frost in your area, they are a cool weather crop. They are easy to grow and like a soil that is moderately fertile, loose and lightly amended with a compost or composted manure. A soil that is highly fertile can cause the crop to have a heavy top growth and stunt the growth of the root. Water is very important in having a healthy productive crop, keep the soil moist at all times and mulch as needed to suppress weeds.
