How To Grow Cabbage

by John Yazo

Cabbage is a crop that thrives in cool weather. It can be planted in most areas as an early and late season crop. It is grown for it's densely packed leafy head and can be easily growing in your home vegetable garden.

It is a crop that prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. The soil conditions that cabbage prefers is a rich soil with a good healthy structure that retains moisture, drains well and can retain the nutrients needed for the plants to thrive. Good soil structure is the key to any successful organic garden. The ph level that is best for it is 6.0 - 6.5. It is a heavy feeder and will be greatly benefited if bron, calcium and magnesium are applied for the early stages of growth.

Cabbage seeds can be sown directly into the garden or started indoors for transplants. When planting transplants in the garden they can go outdoors as early as four weeks before the last expected frost, spaced 6 to 12 inches apart and in rows 1 to 2 feet apart. The spacing of the transplants farther apart ill make for the production of bigger heads, but smaller heads are much taster and tender. When sowing seeds indoors set the seeds in your potting media about 1/4 inch deep and about 2 inches apart., place them in a warm sunny location that the temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

When your crop is ready to be harvested it is best to cut the heads when they are firm from the stem and leaving the stem and root in place. They will produce a small cabbage that can also be harvested to eat, like Brussels Sprouts.
