The Basic Tools Needed to Start Your Organic Garden

by John Yazo

When gardening by organic methods, there are only a few basic tools you will need to have a successful garden. Keep one thing in mind when wanting to incorporate these practices into your garden, nature doesn't own power equipment, it does it naturally.

Starting a new garden is the time that the most physical labor is needed and depending on your existing soil structure, that will determine the extent along with the amount of amendments needed to have a healthy organic soil structure. A few simple soil tests can aid you in determining this.

For starters, a digging fork, spade, shovel, garden hoe, rake and a garden trowel are about all you should need to do the work needed in your garden. If is the soil you are working in to create your garden is to hard to work with these tools, you can simply build a raised bed garden on top of the existing soil or plant in containers.

One thing that is commonly overlooked when purchasing garden tools is if they are comfortable to use. When choosing a tool, don't be afraid to pick it up and handle it just as you would be using it, go through all the same motions you would in the garden. Shovels, rakes, digging forks all come with a variety of handle lengths and in different weights. Find a tool that is going to be comfortable for you to use and handle. Even a garden trowel used for planting can come with different thickness and length of handles, find one that is comfortable for you.

Price doesn't always determine the quality and comfort of a tool. Inspect the tools you want to purchase carefully and the way they are constructed.
