Garden Soil Tilth - Gardens Need Quality Soil

Soil tilth is a term that refers to soil suitability to support plant and root growth. The ease to till soil, healthiness as a seed bed, ease for seedlings to emerge and root penetration.

The ideal garden soil is made up of forty five percent minerals, twenty five percent air, twenty five percent water and five percent organic matter.

Soil with good tilth have large pore space for adequate air infiltration, water movement, retains water well and the ability to hold nutrients.

The texture and structure are the key to a soil with good tilth along with organic matter in the soil.

A healthy garden needs a healthy soil. Good soil texture, structure and tilth are the key to a healthy productive garden.
