Garden Soil Structure, Texture And Tilth

by John Yazo

Texture of soil can not be changed. It is the portions of sand, silt and clay particles that the soil is made up of. Sandy soil has very little silt or clay particles, good well drained loam has about equal amounts of sand, silt, and has usually more than forty percent clay particles.

Structure of soil can not be changed only improved. The structure of soil is basically the assembly of soil. The portions of sand, silt, clay and organic matter. Improving the structure of soil you want to achieve a consistency of a good tilth.

Tilth is the condition of soil relating to how ease it can be tilled, how ease seedlings will emerge through it, how easily roots can penetrate deeply, drains well but still holds water, it accepts water quickly, aerates well and does not crust over.
