Garden Soil Structure
by John Yazo
Soil structure is the arrangement or spacing of the soil particles of sand, silt and clay in soil. It is determined by the shape the soil holds, how it binds itself together and the arrangement of spore space. This is not to get confussed with the portions of these particales that makes up the texture of the soil. The soils structure is what determines air infiltration, water movement, biological activity, root growth and the capability of seeds to emerge through the soil.
Caring for your garden soil is very important. Improving soil structure is the most important part of soil care and adding of organic matter is the best way to accomplish this. Organic matter provides a continuous food source for organisms that are in the soil.
A good soil structure absorbs water rather than letting it run off, allows air infiltration into the soil and has organic matter that will supply the nutrients needed to support plant life along with promoting the growth of organisms in the soil.
