Enriching Your Organic Gardens Soil

by John Yazo

A nutrient rich soil is what makes an organic garden thrive. It is what supports vigorous and healthy plant growth, along with giving the plants the ability to resist insect and diseases naturally.

Soil testing is where it all starts when wanting to know what is needed to improve the soil for your plants to thrive and it should be a standard practice every few years. Knowing the soil texture, fertility and it's ph level is done by three simple tests. You can simply do these tests by purchasing a test kit at most local garden centers or take a soil sample to your Local Corporate Extension Service.

Once you have the results of the test, you can start building the fertile soil your plants need to thrive in. In most cases, the main ingredient that is going to be used in creating a nutrient rich organic soil is compost. Starting your own compost pile to compost your organic household and yard waste will be a great benefit for your gardens soil.

Compost added as a soil amendment to your garden has many benefits. It conditions the soil to improve it's tilth, making it easier for the root systems of your plants to travel through the soil, grow strong and healthy. Composted organic matter also retains the moisture needed for your plants and will convert the soils nutrients into a form that is easier for your plants to feed from.

The best part of composting is that it is free. It is a natural method of creating a free organic fertilizer for your gardening needs, while creating a cleaner environment.
