Garden Soil - Healthy Soil For Healthier Plants

by John Yazo

It is easy to let gardening get out of control when it comes to buying plants for your yard and gardens. Do yourself a big favor and forget about buying plants before you have your areas ready to be planted. Buying plants before they are ready to be planted will put allot of stress on the plant sitting around in the containers waiting for you. When the plants are a a garden center or nursery there is steady care being taken to the plants so they wont get stressed out. Let the nurseries take care of them for you.

Healthy soil is the most important part of organic gardening. This type of gardening you feed the soil so that the soil has all the nutrients to feed your plants. The difference between feeding the soil and feeding the plants is that with a good healthy nutrient rich soil the nutrients are always there for the plants when they need it. When fertilizing plants the nutrients are feed to the plant and the plants takes what it needs at that time and the rest is evaporated or diluted away.

Soil is just not dirt in your garden. It has many characteristics. It's made up of very fine partials of rock, organic matter, microorganisms, water and air. All of these characteristics create the structure and texture of the soil. The living organisms that live in the soil are what works the soil by breaking up the organic matter and turning it or mixing it into the soil.

The structure and texture of the soil is very a important part of organic gardening. It controls the moisture retained, aeration, and nutrition of all types of soils, from sand to clay soil. Before you start gardening you should get to know the type of soil you are working with and what type of soil you need for what you want to plant and the ph  level. All plants don't grow in the same type of soil. There are plants that do better in sandy soil and ones that do better in a clay soil. You can test your soil with testing kits and know just what your plants are looking for.

Crop rotation is another way that you can improve the soil by adding nutrients back into the soil.
