Lupine plants will add character to any flower garden by exhibiting there towering vibrant colors. There spires of bright blooms that reach 3 feet in height make them a display that will rival over other perennials, along with being beautiful choice when used in cut flower arrangements or bouquets. If you are looking for a flowering plant that is just a little out of the ordinary, Lupines can be what you are looking for.
One of the most beautiful perennial flowers grown, the Lupine is easily propagated from seed and naturalize well in partially shaded woodlands. It's long spiked shape of pea shaped flowers cover about 12 inches in length on a stem that is 3 feet tall or higher and large clusters of palm shaped leaves gives this plant it's own unique characteristic.
Planting Lupines in masses will present the best effect from this unique flower. They are a great choice for planting along borders, fence lines or in the background of a flower garden.
This plant will grow in just about any soil type, but doesn't care lime, and once established, they are very easy to culture, but will deplete the soil of nutrients. Amending the soil with plenty of compost should be done yearly. Having a soil with a good healthy organic structure, one that retains moisture nutrients and drains well will provide the best growing condition for this plant. Lupines don't like to be transplanted, once planted it is best to leave them in there present location.
